Veneers
A healthy, attractive smile makes a great first impression and adds a youthful glow to a person’s appearance. If you are unhappy with your smile, porcelain veneers at Salt Lake Prosthodontics can help. Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to hide discoloration and chips, and fill noticeable gaps between teeth. With advanced training in cosmetic and prosthetic dentistry, Dr. Goring has the know-how and confidence to suggest the best treatment to enhance the look of your smile.
We invite you to learn more about how your smile could benefit from the placement of porcelain veneers by contacting Salt Lake Prosthodontics today.
Why Choose Veneers?
There are many reasons why a person may want to change the appearance of their teeth. Porcelain veneers are a versatile option to enhance your smile. Specifically, veneers can be used to correct these common problems:
- Spaces between the teeth
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Dark, yellow, or stained teeth
- Misshapen or crooked teeth
- Small holes or pits in teeth
- Uneven or undersized teeth
Am I a Candidate for Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are the right choice for many patients. However, there are certain underlying conditions that may prevent patients from receiving veneers. Patients must not have any decay, active gum disease or weakened teeth. Additionally, patients must have an adequate amount of enamel on their teeth. These issues can prevent patients from receiving veneers since the veneer will not be able to properly bond to the prepared tooth. Patients that clench or grind their teeth at night are also not typically candidates for veneers.
What is the Process of Getting Veneers?
At Salt Lake Prosthodontics Dr. Goring can place porcelain veneers in two to three appointments. These appointments will include:
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
During this initial appointment, Dr. Goring will examine your teeth and determine if dental veneers are the appropriate solution. Dr. Goring will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure. This will allow you the chance to have an active role in designing and discussing the process moving forward.
Preparation
At the second appointment, Dr. Goring will lightly reduce the surface of your tooth to allow space for the veneer. The buffing typically reduces the tooth by approximately one half of a millimeter. Next, Dr. Goring will take an impression and send it to the lab. If the patient prefers, Dr. Goring can place temporary veneers until the lab has manufactured their new veneers. In about 1 to 2 weeks the custom veneers are ready for placement.
Bonding
At the third appointment, Dr. Goring will try in the new veneers with water or a try-in paste. This is to determine that they are appropriate in fit and color next to your other teeth. At this point, the color of the veneer can still be adjusted by changing the shade of the cement used to adhere it. After the color is finalized, Dr. Goring will bond the veneer to the tooth using special cement.
How to take care of your veneers after they’re placed
Once the veneers are cemented on and any anesthetics wear off, you can eat and chew as you normally would. While the anesthetic is wearing off, be conscious of not chewing on your cheeks or tongue.
Traditional porcelain veneers typically last between 10 and 15 years, and no-prep veneers last around 5 to 7 years. Taking certain precautions can help make sure that you get the longest lifespan out of them possible. These precautions include:
- Don’t chew on hard objects like pens, ice, or your finger nails.
- Never use your teeth to open packaging or condiment packages.
- Try not to chew with your front teeth. Eat harder foods with your back teeth only; cut up hard foods so that this is possible.
- If you grind or clench your teeth at night Dr. Goring will likely recommend a night guard
- If playing sports, you must wear a mouth guard.
